Emmy winners: sets surprise to the modern family and Downton Abbey- VIDEO

The 1950 men's drama and comedy Loco firmly Century 21, Modern Family, won the top drama and comedy awards Emmy Awards, with British period piece Downton Abbey enjoys unexpected success.

After failing to score in the categories for which it was nominated, Mad Men took the Emmy for best drama in a cliffhanger final act.

Modern Family made the greatest distance in the comedy category, as well as the top comedy prize.

Downton Abbey took four awards in total, including best miniseries, best director and best actress for Maggie Smith. The show, whose second series began on ITV in Britain on Sunday night, has been a critical success in the U.S. PBS network.

Oscar-winning actor Kate Winslet won his first Emmy for his starring role in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. "I never thought we would win anything!" Winslet said.

On a night of surprises that brought a lot of newcomers to the podium Emmy, Mad Men won best drama series for the fourth consecutive year, but the wait was tense as the drama of the 1960 advertising lost every race acting writing and directing.

"I never thought would happen," said the creator, Matthew Weiner, to accept the trophy for best drama series. Mad Men has gone home with two Emmy awards - including one of the ceremony last week creating the arts - even though he entered the awards with 19 nominations.

"We were excluded, but also won this award (best drama) so it balances out. To me this is the prize that says people love what we're doing," Weiner said backstage.

The story was different for the modern family. Along with his win for best comedy, the ABC mockumentary about three couples and their children raised ranked first win by Julie Bowen and the display of her husband, Ty Burrell in the slots to support the action, and the Emmy direction and writing.

Creator Steve Levitan called win "an embarrassment of riches", while actor Ed O'Neill said. "It was better than the first time is difficult to repeat that I am relieved .."

"Welcome back to the awards Modern Family!" Emmy ceremony host Jane Lynch joked earlier in the evening.

Elsewhere, a lot of new faces are home to Emmy night that defied all predictions.

The little-seen but critically admired football drama Friday Night Lights won for best screenplay and stars Kyle Chandler's favorite beat Jon Hamm and Steve Buscemi as best dramatic actor.

Melissa McCarthy won lead actress in a comedy in its first shot of the CBS romantic comedy Mike & Molly, in which he plays a professor of overweight.

Peter Dinklage rookie won Emmy for her portrayal of the intelligent Tyrion, but rough on the popular medieval game of HBO, the series of fantasy thrones, while Margo Martindale was an emotional first winner for her role as actress in FX drama justified. The Emmy went to veteran actress after more than 20 years in business.

Julianna Margulies, the star of The Good Wife on CBS, won the race for best dramatic actress. Jim Parsons was a rare repeat winner for the comedy The Big Bang Theory in a category that most experts had thought would finally leave the office star Steve Carell.

"I'm really amazed. I'm more surprised this year," Parsons said backstage.

Glee Fox musical comedy - one of the most talked about shows of the last two years - only won two Emmy Awards, both in the creative arts categories, while HBO luxurious Boardwalk Empire, won seven Emmy Awards for his total of eight the technical section of the awards last week. His only victory on Sunday night was the director Martin Scorsese.

HBO was the biggest winner with 19 Emmys network, PBS followed by 14, 11 for CBS, Fox nine, eight and six for ABC NBC.

Among the achievements of the program was a smiling and apparently sincere Charlie Sheen, on the way back after months of erratic behavior that led to his dismissal from CBS hit two and half men. He was a last-minute addition as a presenter.

"From the bottom of my heart I wish you all the best for next season," Sheen said his former program earlier this year had strongly criticized.

American Idol - the most watched show on U.S. television for the last seven years - was left empty handed once again in the race for reality show competition, which was won by the favorite long-Emmy The Amazing Race.
