Book Meg Whitman: Is it up to running HP? - VIDEO

The list of things to do to Whitman is as follows:

Deciding what to do with the PC business. Should stay or go?
Determine if HP's software strategy and find out if autonomy is the right fit.
Fix the service business and move to higher margin offerings.
Find out if HP pulled the plug on the TouchPad soon.
Define HP.
But that is only short-term elements of HP. Assuming that HP's plan revolves around cloud computing, services, software and integrated systems, it is worth asking if Whitman is up to par. Some analysts now question whether Whitman is the right candidate.

Collins Stewart analyst, said Louis Miscioscia in a research note:

Whitman did not run a company the size of HP, not one focused on the company, which are the concerns that are made more important by the fact that HP is in need of a turnaround in many lines of business, not just a new strategic direction.

Here is a look at the book of Whitman:

Running a large organization. Whitman grew eBay just a puppy to a huge business. The growth and the scale of eBay in the glory days was impressive. Under new leadership, eBay has reinvented itself courtesy of the acquisition of PayPal. However, HP has annual revenues north of $ 100 billion. There are only a few leaders who can handle that scale.

Familiarity with HP. Whitman recently joined HP's board and must know the problems intimately. At least, Whitman knows the strategy and, in theory, was aboard with him.

Hardware know-how. There is nothing in the experience of Whitman, indicating that it can launch servers know the plans of work or to find out what HP's core strategy should be. Moreover, Apotheker kind of hardware was not just anybody.

Software strategy. Whitman knows the Web and e-commerce software and the expansion of a company through his experience on eBay. Apotheker knew through SAP applications. The big question is whether HP's strategy for the software makes sense in the future. Whitman was in favor of the acquisition of autonomy? Maybe. In Whitman's tenure eBay bought Skype in a deal that has not worked as planned.

Services. Whitman must know the consulting business since he was a consultant at Bain. One could argue that the last two of HP, Mark Hurd, CEO Leo Apotheker, and not get the character-high touch strategic consulting. The biggest problem is it will take years to obtain services from HP works at a strategic level.

Branding. Whitman experience Disney, Hasbro and Procter & Gamble indicated that she will know much more about the brand than its predecessors.

Manage expectations. One of the biggest problems is that HP can not handle the expectations. Hurd could, but he is the only general manager in recent history that could pull all the levers for Wall Street.
